Writers’ Coaching Corner (August 2023): Hauntingly, Disturbingly Profound

Good writing occasionally looks the reader in the eye and says something hauntingly, disturbingly profound.

This month is the seventh installment in the second season of the Writers’ Coaching Corner (S2:E7). Each month I take one paragraph from a GCD article to highlight some aspect of what makes for good writing. I’ll point out what made the writing work so well and how we can incorporate more of that writerly goodness into our craft.

This month I use guest author Adam Salloum’s article “Mind Your Platform” to talk about the principle that Good writing occasionally looks the reader in the eye and says something hauntingly, disturbingly profound.

I also mention Luke 15 and Jesus’s parable of the prodigal son, Eugene Peterson’s book The Jesus Way: A Conversation on the Ways that Jesus Is the Way, Ray Ortlund’s video with The Gospel Coalition, and Fredrik Backman’s book The Winners: A Novel, and Mark Forsyth’s book The Elements of Eloquence: Secrets of the Perfect Turn of Phrase.
